Identification: 

-Conical form as young plants, becoming more picturesque with age
-Scale-like foliage, spiny on young specimens, aromatic, evergreen
-Blue, berry-like cone on female plants, ⅛ inch in diameter
-Exfoliating bark on mature specimens

Note:   A widely distributed species in North America, prized for its aromatic and decay resistant red wood.  Well adapted to alkaline soils (pH > 7) and a good indicator species of high pH soils.  Many cultivars exist including selection with gray and blue foliage.
